Cold Brew: What it is and how to make it

What is Cold Brew?

Cold brew is a coffee preparation technique that uses cold or room temperature water for a long period of time. This method results in a smoother tasting, less acidic beverage compared to traditional hot-brewed coffee.

History of Cold Brew

Cold brew has an interesting history that dates back several decades. Although the concept of cold brewing coffee is relatively modern, the method is based on traditional cold brew practices that have been around for centuries. Modern cold brew is thought to have been popularized in Japan in the 17th century, where similar methods were used to cold brew coffee and tea. However, the rise of cold brew in the West came in the 21st century, with a growing demand for less acidic and milder alternatives to traditional coffee.

What's in Cold Brew?

Cold brew requires only two essential ingredients:

  1. Coarse Ground Coffee: We recommend using our House Brew coffee beans , which you should grind coarsely for the best flavor.
  2. Cold or room temperature water: Make sure the water is of good quality for optimal flavor.

You can add optional ingredients when serving, such as ice, milk or some type of sweetener, according to your preferences.

How to make a Cold Brew in 4 Steps?

With a built-in filter bottle , making cold brew at home is a breeze. Here's how to do it using our House Brew coffee beans .

Ingredients and utensils:

  • 100 grams of House Brew coffee beans (coarsely ground)
  • 500 ml of cold or room temperature water (for a 1 litre bottle)
  • Bottle with built-in filter (1 litre capacity)
  • Ice (optional)

Step by step:

  1. Grinding the coffee: Use our House Brew coffee beans and grind them to a coarse consistency, similar to the texture of coarse salt. This is crucial for proper extraction and balanced flavor.

  2. Adding coffee to the bottle: Place 80-100 grams of ground coffee into the bottle filter. You can adjust the amount to suit your preference for a milder or stronger drink.

  3. Adding cold water: Fill the bottle with 500ml of cold or room temperature water , making sure the coffee is completely submerged. The recommended ratio is 1 part coffee to 5 parts water .

  4. Let it sit: Place the bottle in the refrigerator and let it sit for 12 to 24 hours . The amount of time it sits determines the intensity of the flavor, so adjust to suit your taste.

  5. Filter and serve: Remove the filter with the coffee grounds. Your cold brew is ready to enjoy. You can serve it straight, with ice, milk, or sweeten it to your liking.
