Unlike other products, whole bean coffee does not suddenly expire, but it also does not retain its properties indefinitely.
From the moment it is roasted, coffee begins a natural process of evolution: first it develops its best aromas and flavors, then it stabilizes, and finally it starts to lose intensity, sweetness, and definition.
📅 Life stages of coffee at DFRNT
🟩 7 days – 2 months: the optimal point
The coffee has released the CO₂ that could affect extraction and retains all its aromatic nuances. This is the ideal time to enjoy it black or with brewing methods that highlight its flavor.
🟨 2 – 4 months: still balanced
The coffee is still delicious but begins to lose intensity. Perfect for filters, milk coffees, or long espresso.
🟧 4 – 12 months: loss of complexity
The coffee loses body, sweetness, and definition, although it is still safe to consume. It no longer fully reflects its origin or the nuances it had when freshly roasted.
🟥 More than 12 months: not recommended
Oxidation has done its work: the coffee becomes flat, without aroma or character. Better to avoid consuming it if you seek the full specialty coffee experience.
